Selective and Binary Adsorption of Anions onto Biochar and Modified Cellulose from Corn Stalks

Water treatment alternatives such as adsorption using agricultural residues are currently being studied to eliminate pollutants that cause eutrophication in water bodies, avoiding the alteration of aquatic ecosystems. In this work, two bio-adsorbents were prepared cellulose extracted from corn stems, Zea mays, which labeled MC (quaternized modified with Cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) and B 1:1 (biochar obtained by impregnation biomass an H2SO4 solution, 50% v/v, a ratio 1:1% weight volume, followed carbonization at 520 °C for 30 min heating rate 10 °C/min). FTIR, TGA, DSC, SEM-EDS used study properties bio-adsorbents. The effect temperature over nitrate phosphate selective binary system 100 mg/L was tested five temperatures: 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 °C, load pollutant mg/L, volume 5 mL, bio-adsorbent 2 g/L 200 rpm. Results showed removal 29.1% 23.8% 35 °C. case nitrate, 40% determined 25 while 38.5% attained after bio-adsorbent. equilibrium reached 420 min. Nitrate sample good adjustment pseudo-second-order model. pseudo-first-order model described kinetics MC, had fit phosphate. Freundlich’s also adjusted both anions acceptable accuracy. Moreover, indicated selectivity phosphate, suggesting potential applications carbon-based anionic ions remotion aqueous media.
